I work a lot for a client who has several sites hosted by MediaTemple on a GridServer configuration. Most of the time, that results into unusually slow EE sites (the same site hosted somewhere else would be much quicker, so EE’s in the clear, here). Maybe due to MT being in the US and my client and me being in Europe, maybe something else, but my conclusion so far is that GS and EE isn’t a very good combination.

Does anyone have any experience with MT and their Dedicated Virtual servers? My client is considering moving to such a configuration if it improves performance.

Thanks, Victor. I thought it probably would be.

I was a long-time customer of MT, until recenty.  Had two servers, one Grid and one DV.  The Grid was horrendously slow for PHP5 apps and is constantly under maintenance.  The DV server wasn’t much quicker for EE in my opinion.  Plus, I’m not a server admin, and MT does not provide ANY real support beyond referring you to the Knowledge Base. Not to mention, Plesk is simply awful.

If you want the speed of a Semi-dedicated or dedicated and do not want the hassle of administering a server, look at Fused Network.  Superb service and managed servers for no extra cost.  cPanel is much better than Plesk and the speed and reliability Fused servers has been superlative.

In my opinion, MT is way overrated.  Check out Hostjury.com for hosting reviews.

I switched to MT from Fatcow half a year ago and am generally very happu with the performance of my GS.

However, I am increasingly experiencing short down-times of 1-3 minutes during which my site becomes unresponsive. I just wrote to MT a few minutes ago.

I am planning on launching my first big project next week and I am growing increasingly edgy over these downtimes.

I don’t use the Grid Service but have been a customer of the (dv) system over the past few years. The latest release, 3.5, is substantially faster than the previous incarnation. Definitely worth checking out.
