ExpressionEngine is so full of features that I know I’ll never have need of them all, much less need of what those features can often accomplish when used together or in a certain way, etc. But it’s great to know that if I do have a need, the features are there.
Until this week, I had never needed to use EE’s relationship features. But while working on a new staff directory for the college, it was decided that a nice feature would be to include the specific classes taught by each instructor. So I turned to EE’s relationship functions. Created a weblog for the courses (which will also eventually stand on its own), related it to the directory, and it’s like magic.
A quick look and, “We need a link back from the name of the instructor on the course page,” I thought, “to that instructor’s page on the Staff Directory.” A few minutes with the reverse relationship tag took care of that.
The staff directory will probably go live tomorrow. (I still have lots and lots of mug shots to take.) The course directory will go live as soon as I get more courses entered.
It was almost too easy. Can’t have ‘em thinking just anyone can do it, you know. 😉
It was a good week: in addition to the above, tomorrow is Friday, and my trip to SxSW has been approved!
