The keynote validated my purchase of my current Macbook a few months ago. I had debated waiting in case this happens - but nah.

I’ll like to see how it evolves, but the cost, low storage, low ports, and being at 3lbs just doesn’t do it for me. If they’d been able to go sub 2lbs, then maybe. =)

If I didn’t already have a MacBook I’d definitely get one.

I wouldn’t.  It has multiple issues - one biggie is that they went with the aluminum case; unfortunately, that case is allergic to my hands, as evidenced by my pitted, etched, and blackened G4. :(

Just too heavy, they needed to do better to be viable in that market, in my opinion.  Perhaps I’m finickier, though, as that is one of my favorite technology areas to follow. =)

How much more sub can you possibly get and still have a full-sized keyboard?

My issue is that its not a desktop replacement like a MBP. If I got one I’d have to ditch the MBP and get a real desktop.

A full sized keyboard or one that’s perfectly comfortable to type on?  The Vaio that I am mostly comparing it to can be seen in Best Buy - it’s 10 or 11” monitor, and it’s teensy.  But I can type on it just as far as I can type on this. 😉

Well, if you want a subnotebook *Mac* you pretty much have one option. I don’t care how sexy the hardware is on a Vaio, it still runs Windoze.

I’m with you on that, Les.  What gets me is the case (I can’t stop it being allergic to my hands, other than third-party accessories) and now this whole battery issue.

What’s the battery issue? And your hands are really allergic to aluminum?

No, the aluminum is seriously allergic to my hands. Even if I wash them every hour, the case where my wrists are become black, pitted, and etched. I could snap some pictures of the G4 to show this issue.

My hands have no issue.  The common thought is that gold can exacerbate the issue - so I used to not wear any of my jewelry. :(  This is a pretty commonly noted issue with this case, though, or was when I was using the G4 actively enough to research it.

The battery issue is that it is a permanent battery, ala the ipod - not user-replaceable.  That’s really pretty bad for a laptop. 😉

Indeed it is. But I wonder if its replaceable at an Apple store or service center? While that scenario is sucky as well, its not as sucky as “once its dead its dead”.

I replaced the battery on both iPods we have owned. Only took about 30 minutes.

Needs 3 things for me before I would get one, I would expect by the time I am ready to replace my current 2.2ghz C2D Macbook.

    1) 4 gigs of ram capable
    2) 64 gig or larger, but more affordable solid state HD, $1k for the upgrade to the SSD is not appealing at the moment.
    3) 2.2+ ghz

The weight is not a big deal at all for me, 3lbs is fine, and the battery is a non-issue as well.

The crazy thing is that it seems that Apple’s price for the SSD is *below* market price!!!

Yup, but can’t justify $2900 for this system with 1.8ghz C2D and a 64gig SSD 😉  $2199-$2399 would probably be fine, but at this time that $2900 would be about the total price for a MBP 15” with the 2.6ghz upgrade, w/4gigs (through Crucial.com), and a 200gig 7200rpm HD upgrade.  So for that much power I would rather carry the extra 2lbs 😊

[Edit] My pricing is based on educational pricing discount too.
