Just to clarify a few things about EE

Hi there, iv been browsing about the forums / documents and a good play around with the Core version for a good few weeks now and EE seems like a great system.

I have a few points that id like to clarify:

There may well quite a few custom parts i will need to integrate and just to make sure i can use my own php code in just about any part of the site i require? Maybe easier to ask what cant i do with raw php code? Access /Write/manipulate data to DB? Access/ Write cookies? Integrate with AJAX? Custom scripts within any pages? Obviously the whole idea of using a system like EE is that is makes things easier to do than wrote your own system but what limitations are there of adding your own code?

For example: One of the sites i have in mind will use Flash with php. Id like to make a system when they view a video their credits are reduced. These credits would be funded by topping up their account from the payment module. Reasonably straight forward stuff but i just want ensure i dont end in a toggle after investing the time.

How hard is it to construct your own basic modules / plugins? If i were to get something working id really like to contribute back and even if one person got use out of it, it would be worth it. I have moderate skills in php but certainly not a full time developer that specialises in it. Maybe a hard question to answer but a rough idea would be good.

All in all i am very impressed with EE and there seems to be a great community here.

It would be very much appreciated if someone could answer my questions. Thanks.

You can integrate custom PHP in basically any point of the system.  I think there might be some issues with the member templates, but you can do an end-around those and create your own membership templates if need be…  Creating modules, if you know PHP, is very easy. There is some great documentation for doing so - and the community is very helpful when you have questions.

If you’re considering PHP based on it’s flexibility/customizability with regards to PHP I’d say you’d be hard pressed to find something better. Your example about flash seems very do-able with EE.

    Hi TheStig,

Brian already said just about everything I was going to say so I’m just adding a link to our developer info. EE is made from the ground up to be extensible so if you can code php you can likely make EE do anything you need that it doesn’t do out of the box.
