    Hi there,

I’m posting this question in the ‘pre sales’ forum as it relates to a new project and whether we can use EE to power this - please feel free to move it though if you think I’m interpreting this incorrectly.

Basically, we would like to use EE and the MSM to create multiple websites, with each website having its own discussion forum board.

    Here’s my questions:

    1. If a user registers and posts on the discussion forum board on one of the websites, are they also able to post with the same account on the other websites that have forums under the MSM?  And if so, can this ability be prevented if we wanted them restricted to just one forum board on one site?

    2. Each website under the MSM would have its own forum board. As well as this, is it possible, on the ‘main/parent site’ that the MSM is run from, to have a big ‘master forum’ where all the forum boards from each of the sites can be combined into one big forum?  It would be the same content, but just presented as one big forum where users could post/read if they wanted to do so in one site, as opposed to reading and posting in 5 or 6 sites that contain 5 or 6 different forums.

    Thanks,

    Ste

    Hey, Ste,

You can set up member groups and give different member groups different permissions to the forums through the Forum Permission system.  Membership in an EE installation is installation-wide; but you can set member group permissions per-site and per-forum.

As far as the over-all board; Forums are per-site and I’m not aware of a way to accomplish the overall Site-wide board.  Such a creature would have to be custom developed to pull it all together.

Thanks for the quick response Lisa, that sounds fine.

I think I’ll plough on ahead with EE for this and worry about the custom developed ‘site wide board’ at a later date. Either that, or persuade my colleagues that it’s a naff idea and they don’t want to have a site wide board anyway! 😉

As a note, the 30 day demo includes the MSM, so you can try it out that way if you prefer, before purchasing.

Just to clarify, running Boards at different locations, including different Sites is precisely what Forum Board Aliases are for, so yes, that much is possible.

Thanks Derek - just had a very quick look and I can’t believe I missed that - I’d more or less ignored it when setting up a forum board as I didn’t think I’d have any need to give it an alias… 😊

    Thanks,

    Ste
