Hello,

I need clarification on server requirements. According to this page:
http://expressionengine.com/overview/requirements/

PHP version 4.1 or newer.
MySQL version 3.23.32 or newer

I am considering a Virtual Private Server at Liquidweb or Servint. The VPS servers both offer come configured with newer versions of PHP and mySQL (version 5)

1. Will EE work properly on PHP 5 and mySQL 5?
2. Do you lose any features when you run on PHP 5 and mySQL 5?
3. Do you lose any performance when you run on PHP 5 and mySQL 5?

A different webware solution I will be running requires PHP 5 and mySQL 5 and will not run on earlier versions so it would be nice to know that EE will work ok.

Yes- EE should work fine on php/mysql 5- I know the devs routinely test on those.  Just make sure mysql isn’t running in strict mode.  I had a VPS w/Servint and it ran EE no problem- though granted, I believe I was still using v.4.x for both php and mysql.

You can always run the server wizard to check that a server setup meets all the requirements and suggestions.  OK- can’t run it until you pick a server- but you’ll be fine on 5.x.  And since it’s a VPS, run it once you’re setup and you can tweak things out so that everything works.

When I was first setting up my vps, I asked Nevin for some input- he gave me some tips here.  I did like Servint- but have to say, glad I’ve switched over to EngineHosting.  It kind of got to be a hassle having to worry with security and updates and such.  You really need some expertise to tweak out even a VPS.

I will consider EngineHosting should my EE website begin to get a lot of traffic but for now I need some of the other features that a VPS offers such as reseller capability via whm/cPanel, individual client cPanel and larger space.
