I’m sorry if this can be found elsewhere, several searches turned up nothing useful.

I just updated the last of my sites to 1.6.1 (all the others went fine). This site now only shows the index page no matter what link is clicked. Even when viewing templates from control panel, it goes to the index page. Manually typing in links that worked previously also send the page to the index page. Basically, everything forwards to the site index page. (I tried changing templates around and get the same problem!)

Even when I “view” empty templates the site index page shows. I can change the HTML on the template of the site index page and it refreshes to the new template, but it’s the only one that shows!

I tried to force query strings but that did not help.

This site worked fine right up until the update. I didn’t change anything beyond what needed to be updated. I’m sure it’s just a setting that I need to fix, but I can’t for the life of me figure out what it could be. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can you provide the URL of your site, or is it private?

Do you have any htaccess rules in effect?

I had this problem with a fresh install, it turns out after a lot of digging it was due to my server not supporting the path_info server variable.

I found the solution here

though it would be nice if this was more prominent in the installation documentation, as I have installed on a dedicated Ubuntu Linux box.

I too had this problem, except in my case the whole EE setup was running fine for days before it suddenly stopped working (evidently my webhost changed settings and removed the path_info variable, with no notice whatsoever) and luckily the Knowledgebase article cited by marcdiprose fixed it all up. Phew!
