I recently purchased my own dedicated server and will only be hosting 1 or 2 of my own domains on it.

I’ve added CodeIgniter to the default skeleton Build-out for every added domain (It’s a plesk box).

If any of you need a place to host your site/subdomain to use for learning CI, just let me know. No catches, nada.

You send me a domain name and a login name, I’ll send you back a password to login with and get your stuff setup. (Or if you just want a subdomain.. same idea)

Once the server is ready on their side I’ve gotta hop in, recompile PHP and update MySQL.

I’ve always been more of a system admin than a developer and enjoy doing the whole hosting thing.

Some 10 years ago I hosted one of the primary US mirrors for XMMS.org (the ‘winamp’ for linux - just don’t call it that, they’ll stab you in the face). That domain was fun to host on a P2 233 w/ 256M of mem 😊

That server - while hosting XMMS.org was my primary desktop and foot rest. Ah, so classy. I spilled at least 3 sodas on it. They never got inside, thankfully, but damn was that one sticky case. Ech.

I actually learned PHP from one of the WinAmp Developers ([FaTaL]). That’s just cool to me.

Thanks for the offer dude, im sure alot of people here will find that very useful. I know about the benefits of putting CI system folder outside of webroot, but never thought about putting it somewhere all domains will have common access to.

Maybe that way I can just upgrade ONE CI location for the 5 sites I have running it! :D

it’s not in a common place for all domains, it’s just part of the default skeleton directory, so each domain gets it’s own install.

Quick update;

Server is setup.

PHP 5.2.5 (Compiled from scratch)
MySQL 5.0.45 - default package
suPHP installed (and working, miraculously.)
apache 2.2.6 w/ mod_bw and a few other mods.
Ruby 1.8.6 w/ Rails 2.0.2 (I use Ruby for some cronjobs).

What OS did you choose? I am OK for hosting, just curious.

Redhat Fedora Core 7 (My choices were limited to either FC7 or CentOS5).

This is a server that I purchased from the same place I work. It’s also the release of Linux I know best 😊

PHP 5.2.5 (custom-compiled, I hate the packaged ones)
MySQL 5.0.45 (Default package)
ImageMagick (RPM Package)
suPHP 0.6.2 (custom compiled)
Ruby 1.8.6 w/ Rails 2.0.2

Each domain gets an install of CodeIgniter 1.5.4 (It’s own, not a common/central install).

CPU 2.0Ghz Celeron
1G Memory
120G disk

VDed is pretty much the same, except for the Memory (512 w/ 2G burst) and only 10G of disk. The VDed is my ‘bleeding edge’ box. It’s running Fedora Core 6.
