I’m developing plans for a new site and I’m considering EE as the platform.

Basically there’ll be a database that contains some video, imagery and user content and I want people to be able to review the content (eg. a star system, comments or both) and allow members to keep favorites within the site. I’d also like to be able to show a ‘Whats popular’ section on the home page.

    A couple of questions…

    - I’ve noticed that people refer to a ratings plugin (although I can’t seem to find much info on this). Will this allow members to add ratings to content in the site?

    - What’s the best format for video on EE? Windows Media Player/Quicktime/Flash? (I know to an extent this will be determined by the audience)

    - How could members add content to their favourites?

    - Can EE support a scoial network? eg. Allow people to see other member profiles and allow them to become ‘contacts’ and perhaps show content that they have viewed/rated?

Clearly there will be quite a lot of technical development in php etc. but in principal is EE the right engine for a site with these requirements?

    Many thanks,
    Andrew

At solspace.comsoftware you will find the rating and favorites modules.
The Ratings module allows for star rating and also to be able to write reviews. Articles can also be ordered by those.

    The Favorites module

allows users to add weblog entries to their list of favorites. Entries can then be shown in ranked order. Authors of entries can be ranked by how often their entries are saved as a favorite. When viewing one entry, a list of additional entries that others also liked can be shown.

For video the “best” format is flv due to the fact that flash is installed on over 98% of computers now, and it plays right away. Quicktime is best for itunes and feeds though.

See User guide - my account for member options, including email member. For advanced options one may want the forum as well…

but in principal is EE the right engine for a site with these requirements?

After over five years in full time website development I say definitely! After 12 years online, I have yet to see any program that is as flexible and configurable, and have tried a LOT of them (over 30).

Thanks for the info and the link to Solspace. Sounds like just what I need!
