A Site With Multiple Authors

I’m looking for a good CMS for an online magazine site I have to build for a client and ExpressionEngine looks ok, but I wanted to know if it could handle multiple authors? The big question is whether or not there is a function where the managing editor could review submitted content from authors before they are live on the site? That’s the biggie.

If the answer is yes, then we have a winner. Otherwise I may have to look elsewhere.

    Welcome to our community, daBigNY.

Absolutely, you can do this with an entry status workflow. =)

I’d also recommend giving Giving EE a try.

daBigNY, we do this very successfully and actually offer a whole bunch of entry statuses (open, closed, ready, draft, not publishable, etc). The one thing that I would caution you about is that once it is set to open (and published on the site) the author will have the ability to edit the post and even change the status to closed—EE does not lock them out (a feature we would like/need).

Dabbledoo, as a part of your work flow you can assign an entry to another member, such as an editor. That way the original author won’t be able to edit it.

I’d add an additional field for original author if needed.

    Does that make sense?

I guess an option would be to add an author field with a drop down of all authors, but ideally we would like to keep the post attached to the author, not the editor. I believe that there should be an option called “allowed to edit open entries” so we can allow editors to edit open entries but not allow specific writer groups to edit entries.

There is a plug-in or extension that allows modification of editing privileges at the ‘per article’ level. I haven’t used it, but downloaded it because I thought it might be useful sometime in the future.  I believe it’s called “Restrict Entries”.  I can’t recall the author.

I should have just did the look-up before posting, but here it is Restricted Entries.  I believe this will allow you to do what you want, but would add another level of responsibility for editors. My thought is that when an article is being edited, the editor would then be in charge of restricting permissions.  Please note the most recent version is 1.0.3, and is available from Purple Dogfish.  I’m not certain if the newest version has Mark Bowen’s suggested improvements.
