Changing text based on number of categories an entry has

I would like to use the text, ‘Post by author in cat1, cat2, cat2, etc’ if there ARE categories for that entry and the text ‘Posted by author’ if there are no categories.

Would I need to use the category count query to accomplish this? If so, how do I use the {total_results} variable? Do I need to call it from within the query tag? The docs aren’t clear on this.
