My client has a site up now but there current server cannot run EE, so I would like to set up a development site on a new server and then migrate their domain to the new server. Is there anything I should take into consideration when developing? I was thinking of creating a sub domain to stage the working enviroment.

    Thanks in advance, as always.

Do you want to migrate their current site at all- or leave it where it is, get EE up and running on the new host.  Once all is ready on the new host, just flip dns and let the EE powered version take over?

That’s how I’d do it- and would just develop using the IP.  Once it’s time to switch dns, you’d just need to change some paths to use the domain name rather than the IP and then wait for DNS switch.

That’s how I’d handle it.  Sound good- or any difficulties you see with the approach?

Sounds good. Thats how I planned it in my head. But I wanted to double check.

    Thanks

Can you please elaborate a little on the path changes?

Currently my existing (non-EE) site is at http://www.mydomain.com. I want to develop a new site using EE, and when all done switch the DNS to point http://www.mydomain.com to the new site.

During development my new EE site will be at http://www.myotherdomain/myEEsite. When I am all done developing the EE site and point http://www.mydomain.com to it, what path changes do I need to do?

Depends on how you set things up.  And generally, no reason you couldn’t develop on the mydomain site- I’ve done that before when replacing a static site.  But- just depends.  Anyway- what needs changing will also depend.  You’ll need to edit the paths in ‘Admin- System Prefs- General Config’.  You’ll probably need to add the urls in ‘Admin- Weblog Admin- File upload prefs’.  Possible you’ll need to edit some gallery paths.  Ditto forum paths.  Also- ‘Admin- weblog Admin- Weblog Management’- path settings.  Those are the biggies.  But as long as you use {path=""} type globals for most of your links, just switching out the config gets you 90% done.  After that- it depends a bit on what all you’re using.
