    Hi there,

I’m in the process of weighing up my options with regards to what platform to start a new project on, and I wanted to know if there are any existing Jobs or Classifieds type plugins which have been pre-built?

    Cheers, nick.

Hi, Nick - welcome to our community. =)

There are a few sites using EE for this purpose, but I believe that they’re using mostly a weblog with proper membership permissions for posting.  Perhaps you could post the details of what you want and how you want to see the implementation, and we can let you know how EE fits in to that picture.

    Hi Lisa, cheers!

Well, I had thought about a blog type implementation, but I’m not so sure it fits the bill perfectly. I can imagine, in a Job type scenario, there would be multiple fields, ie. ‘Job Title, Salary, Location’ etc - Which is more what I need. For Classifieds, yes, maybe a blog module would be enough.

Let me explain what I need a bit more. I’m building a site which will alow sailing crew to advertise their availability, and also for captains to express their need for crew. I see a Job style of plugin being perfect for this type of thing. For Classifieds… Just what you would normally expect - An item title, wanted price, and some way to contact the poster…

    Hope that helps! nick

Hi, Nick - I just said this in another thread, but it bears repeating here:

This is more of a mind-set.  You can easy rename “weblog” to whatever you want, there is an option for that in the Admin area.  For instance, I often use “Section”.  So I’ll have a section that is a straight up weblog; but another section that handles things like “about the staff” type pages.  If the site as a whole has to manage a product, that could be another “section”.

It’s very easy to get lost in the “weblog” mind-set.  But if you step back and consider that you can set up your own category groups *and* custom field groups per weblog (/section), then you’ll see that you’re talking about managing data.  Each entry is simply data entered to describe a part of that section.

So, in your case, you would simply set up a weblog with a set of custom fields to describe the job.

You don’t need a plugin for that type of implementation; the weblog module is extraordinarly flexible (and you can call it whatever you please); so do not let the word “weblog” deter you.  Try out EE for yourself to get an idea of how it all works.

Ah ok, I didn’t realise you could add custom fields. I understand the mindset if that is the case.

One more question then - Can a user say, sign up for the forums (if I have the forum module) and then advertise a Job on the Job board which is simply a re-named/re-hashed weblog implementation? How flexible are the permissions for crossing over different kinds of content insertion?

I’ll give the system a whirl,

    nick

The membership system is installation-wide; it is not per module.  You set up member groups and place your members into the group that has the appropriate permission. Note: a member may only be part of one group at a time.

So, if you wanted your members to have access to a particular forum and the ability to post a job ad, you’d simply set up that membership group with those permissions.  It’s very straightforward.

    Thanks Lisa!

    One more question, PROMISE!

Can users have their own Blogs?

    Hi, Nick -

No, that would be against our license and you can read more about that in this KB entry.  You can have many authors contributing to shared resources, but not a blog per user.
