    Anyone still design for 800 x 600?

When i do a fixed width site i usually do it around 900px although i am guessing there would be some 800px width screens still around which totally sucks .... for them, because i dont cater for them 😛

Well actually looking at my stats… 10.2% uses 800x600….

That is a fair sized segment.

    Hmm must find thinking cap…

CI Lee, what I did is create a max-width layout. So people with small screens are accomodated for, as are people with large screens, it’s the best of both worlds

It depends on the target market, but I have recently had to design some sites at 800x600.  You just have to get creative and use liquid layouts.  A couple of the projects mentioned above were flash sites so it was easy to have them respond to onResize events and make them truly liquid.

Where my issue is resides in the placement of a menu item… basically I want a menu down the right side that displays third level navigation. However that puts me at 1000px roughly.

Hmm maybe a browser window detect whether that menu gets displayed there or above….

The majority of people are using 1024x768 these days, but that means your page must be under that size for it to look proper on their screens. I think 800-900px should be your *MAX* target wrapper width for the page so that people using 1024x768 won’t have to fullscreen the webpage for things to look how they should.

Yeah, looking at the target market I am going to go for a 1024 design…

    All other can scroll.
