Actually, that’s not a normal black and white photo. It started life as a color photo, but the technique to go to black and white I used is somewhat unorthodox, using Calculations in Photoshop. I find it more appealing for portraits as it helps you bring out subtle changes in contrasty way, resulting in very nice and detailed skin texture. You really can’t get that with Hue/Saturation or greyscale, etc. That little thumbnail doesn’t really show the full detail that results, but you can Google for Calculations / Photoshop / black and white and can probably find some tutorials.
