    Hi!

Before anything let me just say: “Boy, I have never received an activation email so fast!!”

I have a few questions, obviously, but let me describe my site:

    - subject: sports such as skating and gymnastics;
    - purpose: make information available in a simple, effective and professional manner; also to learn more about the people involved in the sport (anthropologist speaking here)
    - type of information to be displayed: news, competition results, athlete profiles, events calendar, articles and interviews, photos, fan reviews and athlete/coaches journals (community, not individual).

I know EE can take care of most of this out of the box or with a little extra coding, which I can do myself, however apart from the content oriented side of the site, there’s also a networking part to it, as I would like the member to be able to have a profile and list their contributions to the site there (reviews, photos).

My question is this: given that my site won’t rely just on user contributed content, and is therefore also a content oriented site, am I allowed to use EE, with the necessary changes, or would it be possible to use EE and another piece of software for the “social networking” part of the site?

Could you recommend a social networking software that goes well with ee?

What if i coded the extra needed functionalities with Code Igniter?

Mind you, I don’t want to make the new MySpace, the site targets a niche market.

    Thank you!

    Isabel

Greetings, Isabel: it’s entirely possible to have a profile in ExpressionEngine, or to list entries made by a particular user.  However, it sounds like you may want more than that, in which case a custom solution is your best option for the social networking side of your project.

You could also use something like aMember or a custom solution to integrate the two logins; and yes, you could certainly use CodeIgniter to build an appropriate app for your project, but you’ll still need to build a way to authenticate to both solutions.

What I would recommend is Trying EE and reading through the Development Docs. =)

    Hi Lisa!

But license wise, is it alright if I code the social networking part within EE?

    Thanks!

Greetings, Isabel:  It is hard for me to tell from your post here what your goal is with the site.  If you are intending on allowing users to have their own mini-sites, even if it is a niche market, then it is not allowed by the license. However, if you intend to have multiple contributors for a shared resource, but with the ability to list an author’s contributions, then that should be fine.

If you are still uncertain, it would be best to email sales with more detail about how you see the social networking area of your site working, and we can delve into it in more depth.

    Thank you!

Alright, i’ll email sales then, I’ll make a list of what I want to do, in a way I still have to sort some things out myself and this will help me. Thanks!

No worries, Isabel. It will help to have the project clarified.  Thank you. =)
