This forum is great but certainly far from lightweight. We’re looking for something less that is more, i.e. closer to the Beast forum functionality:

    Any suggestions?

The EE forums sort of “are what they are” - and the main benefit is a membership that’s integrated with the rest of your site.

If you don’t need that then you’re free to use any other forum out there that suits your need better.

Or go through the EE forum templates and strip out what you don’t want.

As Boyink notes- unless you want member integration, there’s no particular reason you can’t use whatever forum you like.  On the other hand- member integration is a very nice thing to have.

In truth- looking at the forums, there’s no reason you couldn’t strip EE down to have the same look.  Functionality wise, no reason EE couldn’t look just like the one you lined to- it’s just a single category with multiple forums under it.  Looks like it has stickies and such- which EE has.  And a member list- ditto the EE one.  EE also ships with a simplified ‘developer theme’ with fewer bells and whistles showing- you could probably rip out the top half of that and tweak the colors and be in the ballpark looks wise.  Tweaking the style takes a bit of work, but it’s definitely doable- and all that it would take to get a look similar to the one linked.
