    How may I use the information from the EE website? I mean the text information only (no graphic elements)

    For example, may I write on my website:

    Example 1.

    You must set the following directories to 777:

        * images/avatars/uploads/
        * images/captchas/
        * images/member_photos/
        * images/pm_attachments/
        * images/signature_attachments/
        * images/uploads/
        * system/cache/

    May I publish the above text on my website? Where is the borderline what I may and may not publish from the EE website?

    How about these examples:

    Example 2. (An original EE text)

    Imagine that you run a night club in which different musical artists perform nightly. To help promote your club you decide to create an ExpressionEngine weblog to display information about each night's events.

    Example 3.

    For example, you run a movie theater. To help promote your movie theater you decide to create an ExpressionEngine weblog to display information about the movies.

    Has Ex.#3 any copyright infringement?

    (The idea is to translate EE docs and/or modify them subsequently)

    i think that when you ‘translate’ a text to another language there is no copyright infringement.

    ok, but how about publishing the translation?

    Publishing a translation of a copyrighted text can be a violation of the original copyright.  A translation is not a “new text.”  The only time I’m aware of something being considered a new work in regards to copyright law after a translation is on something that’s in the public domain.  An example would be translating the writings/speeches of Cicero from the original Latin and publishing it.

    Now, I’d be surprised if there would be a problem with creating translations of the EE docs, especially if you provided the translations back to Ellis Labs.

    Hi Sigork,

    as long as you cite the source of the translation along with a link to the original, I have no problem with what you’re describing. But it also depends on the context. What are you thinking of doing?

    The main idea is to create a “blog” with useful information. This “blog” will be in HTML.

    That’s be fine with us. Just cite anything that is a translation of our website or User Guide. Thanks for asking!
