You can disable private messages per member group; and if you want them entirely gone, just remove them from the templates.

Hi Lisa, I know.. I am kind of slow. :(
But where in the forums can I change these settings in order to disable private messages for members groups?

Membership is inherent to ExpressionEngine, not to the forums, so you modify those settings in Admin -> Members & Groups and edit each Member Group.
