I have three weblogs that use a common custom field group. Now my customer has asked me to expand one of the weblogs by adding 4 more fields. The problem is they only want the fields added to one weblog. So my question is there a way to duplicate the field group then to expand on the new group leaving the old one the same.

I want it set up like this.
Field group1: Summary, Body, Meta info
Field group2: summary, Body, Meta Info, New Field, new Field, newfield.

I am trying to avoid changing the name of the summary and body field in the second field group. Is this possible?

There is a feature request for “common custom fields” but it is not currently possible.  So to do this, you would need a new custom field group.  How people often handle this is having the shortname of the weblog before the shortname of the field with the shortname of the weblog.  So something like default_site_body, etc.

How many entries are there? You’ll need to get the data over to the new custom fields, but that may require a query to do.

Thanks Lisa, I figured that was the answer, but it didn’t hurt to ask. There are not many entries I was just being lazy I didn’t want to have to change my templates from summary to tour_summary. I guess it will just teach me to plan better next time

Hi, Daniel—Admittedly, I had a similar problem on one site; I built it all with the same custom fields and it didn’t take long for them to request changes.  It’s a good lesson to learn when there are relatively few entries, at least. =)

Perhaps there should be a feature request for the ability to assign more than one Field Group to a weblog much like the way you can add more than one Category Group.

It would help immensely to creating searchable product catalogues etc.
