Grouping fields in publish form

    Hi,

I have a weblog with quite a number of fields. To make it easier for the user, is it possible to group fields into separate “tabs”?

Just like on the Publish page you have the “Publish form”, “Categories”, “Options” tabs, how would I go about adding a new tab and displaying other custom fields on it?

Is there an extension available? If not, would this make for a good feature request? It would certainly extend the organisation and publishing usability for some of those larger and more complex sites.

    Thanks,
    Af.

    Hi there Af,

I don’t know of an extension to create new tabs in that way but I’m sure that it would probably be possible but then comes the bad part in that you would probably end up with an awfully large amount of tabs on some sites.

There is another way with an extension called Field Header.
This allows you to place a title field before a group of fields so that you can group them how you see fit on the Publish page.

Not exactly what you want but I don’t think you will be disappointed with it.

The link to download is in the link above in a post by MediaGirl just above the post I made some time back.

    Hope this helps.

    Best wishes,

    Mark

Now that’s just awesome - and another reason why I love EE and this community!

This is going to help heaps - thanks Mark.

    Cheers,
    Af.

Hmmm ... just installed the extension. No errors which is good. Now, I can’t figure out how to use it! I can’t find the “header” field anywhere when adding a new custom field, etc.

    Am I missing something here?

    Cheers,
    Af.

    Hi there Af,

When you say you have installed the extension have you just uploaded it to your FTP or have you also enabled the extension in the extensions panel of EE?

If you haven’t enabled it then you will need to do this first by going to :

Admin -> Utilities -> Extensions Manager

At the top right of this section if you haven’t already done so then there will be a button which might say Enable Extensions?. If it does then you will need to click that first and accept what it says. This will enable extensions to be able to work on the site.

Next up you will need to enable the field header extension itself as each extension needs to be enabled separately.

Find in the list on that page the field header extension and click on the Enable? link on the right hand side of it and accept the message. The extension will now be installed. Once that is done then you can go to create a new custom weblog field and you should see an option in the field type as per the first image attached to this post.

You will need to select the field header option and then afterwards (if you have already created all your main weblog fields) order the field so that it comes before the fields that you want to group together. Image two attached to this post shows that.

Let me know if any of that helps with it. If not then let me know and we will try to drill this down some more to find out where the problem is.

    Hope this helps.

    Best wishes,

    Mark

Ahhh, got ya now. It was all enabled properly. I just didn’t realise it was a separate “field type”. I assumed that it would be an additional field for me to fill in when creating a custom field.

All good now. Thanks for the find and the help. Works beautifully.

    Cheers,
    Af.

    Hi Derek,

No problem. Did you need the extension also then? 😊

Seriously though it is never a problem to help out a fellow EE user as I have had a good fair share of people helping me out in the past and still to this day so giving back to the community is very definitely my number one priority at all times.

Also having a memory that pretty much never forgets something once read (as long as I understand it that is though!! 😊 ) helps a lot in being able to remember all the extensions, plug-ins and modules that I may have come across in my quests!! 😊

    Best wishes,

    Mark
