Yep, I agree.  with Ubuntu, LTS is the way to go… I will be seriously looking into the next LTS release (spring 2008 I believe) as far as the server goes.  I think Ubuntu has come a long way on the server side in the past year so it will be interesting.  I’m particularly looking at it with regards to being an interesting LTSP (http://www.ltsp.org) server.

In the mean time I’m anxously awaiting the Ubuntu 7.10 desktop release.

But as far as servers go… you can’t really go wrong here.

Hey, that’s easy. Just load the Edubuntu Server edition (comes on the Edubuntu CD), and you have a full operating LTSP server, just like that (TM).

I know what I am talking about. I am a person of authority on this subject. Respect my author-i-tay ... lol

I was linux admin for 4 years. I know guys have been doing this for 15 years, working with linux and bsd. Ranking the distros you have listed in terms of stability, performance and ease of maintenance for a dedicated server, I know my friends would agree with me when I say the order is: Debian, Fedora, Ubuntu.

Now if you want to throw in CentOS, FreeBSD, RHEL and SUSE the order would be something like this.

Debian, FreeBSD, RHEL, Fedora, CentOS, Ubuntu, SUSE.

    Does that help?

    Hey…. don’t forget one thing

Linux distros are like cigarrs, beers, programming languages. Is a personal choice.

What is the best beer? Here when I live, you’ll discuss with 3-4 beers. What the best programming language? Some say PHP, others Java, others (insane) ASP.net ....

Why don’t you install a distro in your local machine and make tests? YOU WILL BE THE ADMINISTRATOR, so you need to feel security to use the distro.

(but I still vote in CentOS :cheese: )

I would pretty much agree with llbbl list. However, i would not have CentOs below fedora. Other way round for me.
