    Gunter! Aikido and Kalaripyattu!

Both martial arts are awesome, I have just started learning Aikido and have trained a little Kalaripyattu on my own (not many instructors in my area).

I was a die hard Kenpo student/instructor for quite some time as well. Learning multiple martial arts is like learning multiple programming languages; my life seems much more dynamic.

Iksander! I am not alone! 😊

I learned Kalarippayat (if it´s possible to say learned…) in Kerala/India for 3 months. We trained at 6 am and 6 pm, after a week they showed me how they use the stick, I did a Kata with the Gurrukal and after 2 weeks they took me to presentations/shows… which was really funny/scary… after some times I could really enjoy it!
And then I bought a video camera to save this experience… It´s nice to look at these videos now

And Aikido is very important for me! It´s nice to go to training after a working day and throw someone over the mat, or be thrown, and everything feels just comfortable…
Yes… nice to see the things from another side!

    Damn right, thats me.

    Me 2 😊

I spend time trying to eliminate unnecessary stuff.  It’s usually my old hobbies that get the boot, but I’m running out of those.

Now that Zend Framework—can I safely ignore that?  Delete the downloads?  Remove the cognitive drain?  Please?

I was able to rm -rf ~/rails-stuff without too much problem.

Same here - it was fun while it lasted, but I’m not a big fan of stuff magically happening. I’m glad I went through it though, it gave me a much deeper appreciation for PHP/CI and helped me understand a lot of concepts I couldn’t quite grasp the first time I jumped on the CI train (when it launched).

The experience with Ruby has proved beneficial though, as I just recently used Ruby/Hpricot to assist in some contract work.

hm,  that could be handy.  too bad there’s no PHP-based one.  trying to cut down on my hobbies…even if it is one of _why’s wares 😉

Still need help here.  I don’t have time to find out for myself.  I could download 1.0.2 and struggle with it to eliminate it again…everytime I delve into the source it just looks ugly,  I see proposals get released that get criticized (Zend_Forms) and I know they’re done better here in CI and elsewhere.  Sigh…is Zend Framework inevitable though?

    Thx,

This is simple: ( you think too much! )

If you have the time spare, have a dabble with the Zend Framework, if not stick with CI. I don’t see how CI is going to die any time soon.

yep,  always have…too much talking 😊

Was looking over ZF forums the other day,  saw a message “that feature is incompatible with PHP 5.2.0,  check your PHP version”.  It occurred to me that ZF is really intended for enterprises paying for Zend Core with automatic updates.  How else is anyone going to keep the PHP installation up-to-date fast enough,  with a library targeting only the latest versions of PHP.

Whereas with CI you have this range of compatibility.  5.2.0 is a pretty late version,  should be good for something, no?

I asked myself, well what on earth could they be doing in the library that depended on that new of a language feature,  some kind of introspection feature?

But that is the overall stated mission of ZF,  to get people using the latest PHP.  Well,  I think it’s working out that ZF is a way to sell Zend Core to enterprises.

Yeah I think too much…oh well,  back to my ATK undocumented business super-CRUD european bloatware.

Just took yet another tour of the ZF codebase to try to save myself the time of trying it out,  it’s overengineered IMO.  At first I was skeptical of XMLRPC in CI,  I mean what’s it for,  to ping other apps.  Well ok.  The code looks good and it’s readable.  But in ZF they involve some kind of abstractions and a Server Reflection class to put together a RPC command.

I guess they’re trying to sell Certificates, CPUs and Clusters too to run this code…

Think I’ll just stick around CI/EE.  I just don’t like the coding style of ZF,  once again.  Already got a bloated framework I’m stuck with, ATK,  but I can’t bring myself to write all the CRUD and templating required for business apps and ZF does nothing for this problem.  CI for everything else…

    Well I feel lighter…

kucerar you’re not the only one I’ve heard say that they didn’t like the way ZF was coded, I personally haven’t partaken, and can’t say I’ve had the urge yet. I browsed the ZF site when I found out that the new ecommerce app Magento was built with it, but the ZF didn’t jump out at me. Guess I’m too much of a novice or something, just seemed over the top.

PS didn’t mean anything when I said you thought too much, I was just kidding.
