Sorting idiosyncrasies

Maybe we dont know what the heck we are doing but we have had the hardest time sorting. Here is the common problem. If we make a list like this

    1 - January
    2 - February
    3 - March
    4 - April
    5 - May
    6 - June
    7 - July
    8 - August
    9 - September
    10 - October
    11 - November
    12 - December

and sort it. it will do it like this:

    1 - January
    10 - October
    11 - November
    12 - December
    2 - February
    3 - March
    4 - April
    5 - May
    6 - June
    7 - July
    8 - August
    9 - September

This has been a common problem for us. One example is when we make a list on the side like a sidebar and we want to move certain stuff around on the list so we make a field and type 1,2,3,4 etc but what happens when we got to ten is this 1,10,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9, This is no good. So next we tried this: 1.,1.1,1.2,1.3,2,2.1,2.2 etc. again not a good solution. The only sorting we have seen in ee is the ability to sort templates by alphabetical. We cant even sort custom fields. We have one weblog with 20 custom fields. If we want to rearrange them we have to retype in all the number for all 20 fields again. Over all We have had a lot of trouble trying to get sorting to work in our favor. Right now we need to display a list of seminar dates but we do not want to use the date box in the custom field because we might need to do date ranges: 2-5/4/2008.

Is there something we are missing?

One solution is to use 01,02, etc. I’ve used this with clients previously. Instead of using a text field to hold this, I create a drop down list instead, with 99 being the first entry. That forces the content to the bottom if you don’t care where it fits.

    Does that make sense?
