What Operating System Do You Use?

Come on people. No need for insulting each other. Each platform has its strengths and we’ve seen that each plays a role in most developers’ lives. I use all 3, as do many others, but I have my preferred platform.

I don’t necessarily *hate* any of them, but some definitely make life harder than others. Anybody that hates a platform doesn’t understand it at all.

lol, Windows is actually a pretty stable operating system. I think a lot of the “smack” that gets talked about it still stems from the year or so immediately after XP was launched (the same thing that Vista is going through right now).

Personally, I run XP at home and the entire DoD does as well. At home, I have never experienced a crash in the past 2-3 years and I rarely feel the need to reboot my machine (maybe once a month). Windows is what my wife is used to and it supports my development and gaming habits perfectly.

I’ve run Ubuntu in the past - but it seemed like everything took me much longer to accomplish than it would in Windows. I couldn’t get things setup exactly how I wanted, primarily because I was fighting permissions issues the entire time. Yes, I know it’s more secure to not be admin all the time - but I don’t care. I want my machine setup the way I want it.

We used Macs at the development studio I worked at during college. Macs are pretty awesome, I must admit, and if it wasn’t for the fact that they are overpriced and I would be limiting myself on what I can accomplish - I would probably get one. The interoperability between applications is fantastic (Adobe suite, for the win), but I really don’t use these applications any longer (since I don’t do print work anymore). Sure, I might use Photoshop, but when’s the last time I felt the need to drag-and-drop an image from PS into Pagemaker? Probably back when I was hosting on Geocities and Angelfire.

All in all, I think these days, the “dogging” on Windows is unfounded bias. Each system has their perks and for many of us, it’s Windows - it gives us the greatest amount of flexibility to do what we want and how we want. Although there are security issues, especially after the launch of a new OS, this is to be expected and as long as Microsoft stays on top of patching (and I stay on top of my antivirus and antispyware) I’m fine with that.

Side note: I’ll be running Ubuntu on my Media Center machine once it is fully built. Why pay for Tivo when you can create your own? 😊

Just to give an example… I’ve used Macs and Windows PC for 10+ years, so I know them both really well. My primary platform is Mac OS, but for twelve months (during 2005-2006), I worked solely on Windows to see if it could match the Mac. I tried out different software packages (editor, ftp app, svn client, image editors, mockup programs) trying to find something that worked as well as the Mac counterparts. It was an overall disaster from a productivity standpoint and I never enjoyed the work a single day. It was frustrating work, and I spent a good deal of my time trying to sort out problems rather than getting work done. Everything from one program locking a file so others couldn’t access it, to programs just not working properly to entire system lockups. What a mess. I know this probably doesn’t describe the typical Windows experience, but it was enough for me to draw a conclusion.

My productivity was restored when I returned to the Mac. I can easily run 15 programs all at once and they all play together beautifully.

Each platform has its strengths. They are not equal.

My apologies - was not trying to insult anybody… my personal preferences sometime come off a bit strong, so sorry for any offense caused.  It’s more of a disgust with Microsoft than anything else.  Up until about 4-5 years ago I was a solid Windows user and was pro Microsoft all the way, but having become disgusted with their business practices and seeing the freedom (as in speech) provided by free and open source software, I converted over to GNU/Linux.

    I’m just a little linux fanboy, that’s all…  😊

I know what it’s like to feel strongly about your preferred platform. Just bothered me to see this thread turning negative. We are a friendly community here.

Need to separate truth from opinion, and the truth is that Macs rule! 😊

    Okay, that wasn’t fair.

😛 would generally indicate the fact that I was joking 😊

I was struggling to decide what to put on my Media Center. I wasn’t sure if Windows MCE would have done what I wanted, and Linux MCE is really clever, but the interface looked pretty trash to be honest. I ended up just loading on Windows XP and using MediaPortal, which is awesome and does exactly what I was looking for 😊

I can definatly understand a few peoples points here about wanting a platform that just works. I used to be a Linux fanboy but stuck on Windows for work related apps. I used to dual boot Linux for a while and whilst using it I (while I LOVE Linux in theory) never felt a strong desire to work using it as my soul OS.

If any of you have had one of those sort of Linux days where you cant get your work done because you dont have the app, but to install the app you need to compile it, but you dont have the compiling tool, so you try and download the compiler, but you need a compiler to compile & install the compiler to install the app… Then you will know what I mean. There is too much faf! Linux just normally will NOT do what I want it to do, and if I can get it working its normally only because I spent 30 minutes on a IRC chat or crawling the web.

Windows is a step up from this. It will normally do what you want perfectly fine. Now and then there will be retarded things it will do, or it will bug and glitch left right and center (talking XP here not Vista, gave up on that one!) but it gets things done.

Mac OS X however, is a step above the rest. Whilst using it for the last few weeks I have found it to do exactly what you want and when you want it. Add/Remove programs is ridiculously simple. Anybody fed up with having to run registry fixers because the unistalation of a program didnt quite work and left registry settings everywhere? Anyone found files/folders clogging up their machine for a program they havent been using in 3 years? Mac OS X doesnt do anything particular you cant do anywhere else, it just does everything else faster and easier.

While Mac’s may be overpriced they sure as hell make up for it in free software. As far as I can tell Mac OSX seems to be a VERY polished type of Linux. Similar software, but its all better :D Transmit, Transmission, AbiWord, Adium, and unmentionable others, all free and none of them give the slightest of nags to purchase!

To summarise, Mac’s aren’t for n00bs or silly little art students/idiots who want to browse net and dont understand how to use right click. Mac’s are for people that can’t be screwed faffing, and want to get things done as fast, easily as possible, with a nice UI thrown in as a nice bonus!

Yeah, trying to compile stuff in Linux just takes the piss sometimes. Using APT and/or Yum makes things so much easier of course but it kinda feels like cheating 😛

    Hi All,

I use the same operating system as the majority of my users.

It’s based off of Unix yes, but there is a lot of difference. That’s like saying Windows 95 is nothing more than DOS - a drastic oversimplification.

shouldn’t there be an option for “All the above”? At work I dev on both windows and linux boxes and at home due to recent fortunate accident to my laptop I will be (hopefully soon) replacing my Vista machine with a Macbook Pro…
