Do you use the MSM or did you choose to leave your sites separate?

Just curious. Can’t decide what I want to do, although from a financial standpoint, MSM is the way to go.

What are the +‘s of just keeping sites on separate installs? If any?

I use the old method for multiple site manage. A single install, with subsites, but no MSM.  For our site (Nonprofit Tech), soon as we finish transitioning it, we plan to use MSM, because our family of sites are mostly separate. But oddly enough, most of our clients with multiple sites, the subsites share content or are in actually, comprised entirely by data also on the main site (they are like topical mini sites), and there’s just no need for MSM. There is no separation of data required. So we created a subsite_id system. Post then select from a list which sites you wish the post to appear on (all post appear on the main site).

What I’m looking forward to using MSM for is, something like Ellis Lab has done. We have our main site, a tech library, our tech support system (which is currently custom build, so would need to be recreated using EE); and then we have other smaller project sites. Each site is relatively independent, but once the sites are combined under a single install, we would take advantage of being able to share things such as a FAQs list, or tech support solutions, etc.

Ah, that’s some good points. I never looked at it like that. I guess the MSM is geared to be able to share different data, such as you said, maybe a FAQ list. For my sites, I definitely won’t need to share any data, so maybe it’s not such a good idea to do that and have all my eggs in one basket so to speak? I guess if I’ve got all my sites using the same database and for whatever reason the database goes on the fritz, I’m losing information for multiple sites, rather than just one.

It is very appealing to be able to add sites for $25 though instead of $99. 😊

Ahhhh, but the beauty is you can have all your sites backed up in one fell swoop.  Personally, while I do trust my ISP to do daily backups, I also like performing manual backups myself. Having to go into a single CP to do this, is very nice, as well.

Ah, another good point. I’m a little slow sometimes. lol.

Yeah, backing everything up at once rather than doing it multiple times is definitely appealing. Ok, I’m back to considering it again. hehe
