Comment total not matching database count

I’ve searched around for this and tried various methods to fix this but have come up stumped.

We have a site running EE 1.6.0 with the latest build.  We set up a basic blog and discovered the comment totals do not match the actual number of comments. At first it stayed at 0 comments even though a few comments were left.  After recounting statistics and clearing the cache it now suggests EVERY entry has 3 comments when that is clearly not the case.

The odd part is, the numbers are all correct in the CP Edit section, and in the table itself of the database.  It just is incorrect on the actual site.

Anyone know how to correct this?  Thanks in advance.

A few questions: can you confirm the build number for us?

Also, can you post the entire template that is outputting the incorrect comment count?
