I have a number of entries that have special quotes (smart quotes) and other special characters. I have my characters set up properly so that it displays correctly in the entries.

I need to limit the posting to post as a teaser on the index page. My special quotes is getting mangled by $TMPL->tagdata. The result is:

“I started mentoring Andrew as a way of practicing unselfishness and learning how to reach out and reach into another person’s life.

I have tried all the word and character limiters in the plug in library. Does anybody have any suggestions?

I’m a little fuzzy on the setup- are you using the weblog tag and that’s resulting in mangled characters?  Or…  Can you post the tag you’re using to get the display.  Also- is it possible to link to an example page?  And- are you specifying a character set on the frontend via the metatag?

    Robin:
    All great questions!

In the process of tracking them down you helped me solve the problem. It was the charset meta tag that was missing that caused the problem. I was sure that I had placed it in the template that I started building the site with but it was certainly missing.

    Just a side comment…
There are a lot of posts (like this one) where a person does not actually have a bug, they are just not using the built in capability of the software. EE is a good package. Well thought out. I’ll bet it’s a great feeling to be a part of such a capable product.

Thanks for what you guys do, it’s truly excellent.
