I’m finished with my new templates (new theme) and I’m ready to make the cut over.

The problem is, there are many links out there on the web which specify the old theme.

eg:

/index.php/?/sg_distro/story_name

I would like to find a way to redirect all those incoming links to the new templates

/index.php/?/en/story_name/

Is there a simple way to achieve this? Last time I change themes it was months later and I was still getting referrers with the old theme link.

EDIT: Actually I got impatient and DID make the cutover. I changed my rss templates so that’s not a problem but I’m trying to figure out how to handle this.

just a normal redirect 301 in .htaccess? That’s how I handle it.

Hrm, well I’m familiar with how to do file redirects with 301 but not folders with a dynamic end.

Yuck this means I have to go back to .htaccess school :(

OK i’ve been working on this and I must be missing something.

To me this looks right? anyone with a better understanding?

RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.hillaryproject.com/index.php?/en/story-details/$1 [L,R=301]

I really meant a redirect, not a rewrite:

Redirect /index.php/?/sg_distro <a href="http://www.hillaryproject.com/index.php?/en/story_details/">http://www.hillaryproject.com/index.php?/en/story_details/</a>

It will do this for these URLs and anything under them. You should not need a rewrite for this simple type of redirect.

Actually I tried a redirect first but it didn’t help. I just pasted that in as you post and it doesn’t work either.

FYI i made a slight change from your example:

Redirect /index.php?/sg_distro http://www.hillaryproject.com/index.php?/en/story_details/

What about it didn’t work?  Can you paste the original URL here (I could put it together but lets make sure we’re testing the same thing eh?). Thanks.

Well I made another change too. here’s what I have now:
Redirect index.php?/sg_distro/comments http://www.hillaryproject.com/index.php?/en/story_details/

Here’s an example:
http://www.hillaryproject.com/index.php?/sg_distro/hillary_says_bills_dont_ask_dont_tell_gays_in_the_military_policy_should_be/

Needs to go here:
http://www.hillaryproject.com/index.php?/en/story-details/hillary_says_bills_dont_ask_dont_tell_gays_in_the_military_policy_should_be/

And this:
http://www.hillaryproject.com/index.php?/sg_distro/comments/hillary_says_bills_dont_ask_dont_tell_gays_in_the_military_policy_should_be/

Needs to go here:

You need it to be /index.php - not index.php.

OK here’s what I have now: There’s two redirects that have to happen because at one point my rss was wrong

Redirect /index.php?/sg_distro http://www.hillaryproject.com/index.php?/en/story_details/
Redirect /index.php?/sg_distro/comments http://www.hillaryproject.com/index.php?/en/story_details/

This doens’t work. The incoming link is:

http://www.hillaryproject.com/index.php?/sg_distro/hillary_says_bills_dont_ask_dont_tell_gays_in_the_military_policy_should_be/

These types of redirects are working on my site, so I think someone with more knowledge in this area may need to step in and help here.  Sorry, JT :(

No problem. I appreciate you trying to help. It actually solidifies my thought that I was doing it right. The redirect part.

FYI for anyone else that might run into this. here’s the problem.

I was trying to match URL-paths with hostnames, and query strings are not visible to RewriteRule so:

RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} ^/sg_distro/comments/([^/]+)/$
RewriteRule ^index\.php$ http://www.hillaryproject.com/index.php?/en/story-details/%1 [R=301,L]

This works. Of course the redirect would have been MUCH easier had it worked for me.
