I recently ran into the bug with the older version of mod_comments.php being unable to handle queries to a table with a large number of comments. We started approaching 90,000, and the table size was just shy of 64Mb, and the script choked. That was in 1.4.1, and an upgrade to 1.6 fixed the problem.

My question is, what should we be prepared for in the future regarding the large-and-growing size of our comment table? I can easily see it doubling in size within the next 8-12 mos.

Is it healthy to have a mySQL table larger than 128Mb? How will 1.6 handle this? Is there some strategy I need to be anticipating to prevent another lock-up?

As far as MySQL itself your database can be much larger than that. well into the gigabytes. I’m pretty sure EE can handle it. it’s very efficient.
