(How) are you using custom category fields?

Hi all, I just read the the version 1.6 docs on custom category fields.
My question is: what are/could be some practical uses for this?
    Any suggestions welcome 😊

I’ll bump this. I recall thinking ‘great’ when I saw it on the change log, but suddenly seem to have an absolute lack of imagination for what they could be used for. I’d love to hear what people are doing with them, or even what the EE Team imagined people would do with them.

You’re bumping it after an hour? 😉

Anyway - I’m using this for links that are category-specific, and I use textile to format it so I can create a list of links relative to that specific category.

Also, this could easily be used for banner ads specific to categories, and most definitel multi-language sites.

I can see banner ads or ads in general, but I’m not certain what you mean for multi-language sites?

Well, multi-lingual sites have often requesteed ways to have category URLs in multiple languages, category descriptions in multiple languages, etc.  With unlimited custom fields, this becomes much easier.

This question was raised when we provided the 1.6 preview, and I gave a few examples that might help give you ideas as well.

If I can get them to work…

I want to use them for page title, H1, H2, meta description, meta keywords tags on my category pages.

Thanks Derek and Lisa for chiming in… I’m beginning to see how this could be handy 😊

I didn’t know it but I have been longing for Custom Category Fields. What I want them for is to add details about a course (which consists of a number of lectures). So the lecture belongs to a category, which is in fact, a course.

My question is this: how could I add TinyMCE wysiwyg editing capabilities to the field when I edit the category? Is there a hook somewhere?

Here is the page so far but without any formatting for the Intro to the lecture series…
EDIT: I am currently achieving this by putting HTML into the Custom Field

The new category functionality in 1.6 has me very excited.  The new custom fields are going to be a godsend in the future and the new url_title functionality is something I’ve been asking for for awhile.  😊

I’ve used the category image and category description fields for all kinds of strange things in the past so it will be incredibly nice to have the ability to use a field more appropriately named in the future.  Even better I won’t be limited to only two fields.
