Doesn’t the integrated EE Wiki have enough features for you?

There are a bunch of wikis out there. But it really depends on your requirements. I’ve found mediawiki is very powerful, but also tricky to template.

Yes, depending what you want to do - adding and editing content - can be done very much in EE and we have a large number of professionals as well as the job board =)

No, it is not the same, it is our own code, but it has many, many of the needed wiki features.

the problem i am thinking until now is : there are a lot of buddhist books that need to be written into the wiki, however wikis only tend to cater for article types of content ? 1 article type, meanwhile books are hundreds of pages ?

i am not sure how i should categorize the articles into the buddhist book. since wiki usually links to too many pages ? any suggestions ? thanks so much for your help 😊

You could set up a wiki fine for this, you just need to make sure the categories are set up correctly for each book. Sounds like the other way to go is to set up a weblog with custom fields for each book (but then you said open editing/contribution from readers is a priority so this kind of excludes this option).

Wikis are perfect for it, you just need to define the structure and start pages correctly so users don’t get lost, or set up pages in the wrong areas.
