Some admin pages not displaying

Some of the pages in my admin area won’t display, they show a page cannot be found error.  Two examples are when I click on edit file upload preferences, and when I try to add new custom weblog fields.  I reuploaded all of the files in the system folder because I thought perhaps some didn’t upload properly when I did the install, but that didn’t help.  Does anyone have any other ideas of what I might check?

    Thanks!

Andrea, which version/build of EE are you using? Are you using MSM?

    Hi Sue,

I’m sorry, I’m using EE version 1.6.0.  I’m not sure what MSM is.

Ah, I see now that it’s the multi-site manager.  I am not using that.

Any extensions installed?  And what’s the build number?  It’s in the footer in the control panel.  And… unless there are extensions, only thing I can think of is a corrupted file.  And you’ve uploaded clean copies, so….  If you don’t have extensions, are you up for granting me superadmin access?  I’d like to see this in action.  If that’s good- pm the info over.

    Hi Robin,

The build is 20070708.  I don’t have anything else installed except the FreeForm module.  I would be happy to provide you with access.  I’ll send a PM with the login info.

    Thank you for your help!

I poked around and all is exactly as described.  My bet is going to be a corrupt file/white space issue.  And since you’re on the 08 version, might as well go ahead and do a full build update- I don’t actually think it’s a bug.  But won’t hurt to get on the latest.  And be sure to delete the existing files when you ftp up the latest version.  In fact- I usually just upload the whole new system folder, rename the current system folder system_bk, rename the brand new one whatever your existing system folder is named.  Copy over the config.php, config_bk.php, chmod cache and config folders, and then add in any extra 3rd party modules/plugins/extensions- ie. freeform.  Is faster for me to do it that way.

But hopefully- it’s a corrupt file.

I just upgraded to 1.6, whereupon the Plugin Manager stopped working/displaying…

I’ll try to overwrite the installation files, in hopes that it’s just a corrupt file somewhere…

Thank you for the advice, Sue.  I did as you suggested and updated the build, however I am still experiencing the same problem.

Mike, if you still need help please begin a new thread.

Andrea, can you paste the exact error that you’re seeing, please?

In Firefox I just get a blank screen.  In IE I get the following:

“Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

      Most likely causes:
You are not connected to the Internet.
    The website is encountering problems.
There might be a typing error in the address. “

Are you able to view Admin -> System Preferences -> Output and Debugging Preferences? If so, can you turn on PHP errors, and let me know if that shows anything?

Without an error it’s all guesswork, but at this point that’s all I have - my guess, as such, is that either you have a mod_security item stopping display or it’s running out of memory. Either one you’ll need to ask the host, so you might confirm with them if they can up you from the default of 8 to 16 or 32 for memory, and ask them if they have any mod_security restrictions.

Thanks, Lisa.  I’ll contact my server techs and ask them about those items.  The PHP error setting is turned on, but it isn’t displaying any error messages.

Andrea, can you run a fast test for me?

Create a plain file, call it php-test.php.  Place this into it:

    <?php
    echo "Hello World
    ?>

upload and visit it in your browser - do you get a blank page or an error?
