Domain Registrars and all that

Had an e-mail from Nominet today telling me that one of my .co.uk domains was due to expire - opened it up to find that it expired last night. I have not had any warning e-mails which is annoying. So I immediately went to the site to check and sure enough there is a holding page in place and no site. Fortunately this is not a client site. The hosting providers I use are superb but they moved registrars from TuCows a few years ago, to Enom who have been abysmal. I have about 50 domains that I would like to move to a new registrar because I am fed up with Enom (it not the hosts fault - they are great and are just as frustrated as me - but are tied into a deal with them…). I am not looking for a cheapo registrar, like [email protected], because they bring their own problems - cheap penny domains = no service.

So can I have opinions experiences on who are good registrars to deal with - previously a few people have said Go Daddy to me so I will probably look at them first. Suggestions welcome please!

I can second GoDaddy. I have about 50 domains there, and haven’t had any problems. I like the way you can manage just about anything domain related. You’ll have to dig through the ads and added services they throw at you tho, but once you get the hang of it, it’s very easy.

It’s not eNom’s fault you didn’t get notices. They send out notices at 30 days, 14 days, 7 days then a final one (that might be at 7 days though).

The reason you didn’t get notice would be because whoever you’re getting domains through did not list your email address with theirs, and I can assure you they did get the notices.

I’ve had thousands of domains registered at eNom through myself and customers and never had a single problem. With Godaddy though I had a domain hijacked. Literally stolen. If the domain wouldn’t have been a celebrity and I easily proved to them that it was stolen it would probably never have come back.

What other problems have you had at eNom? Sounds more like pains from moving from one registrar to another. You wouldn’t be happen to have been caught in the huge net of the registerfly disaster would you?

There’s one other way to avoid these problems. You have 50 domains. Why not just become your own reseller? it’s free and you will cut out the middle man. I can assure you from 7 years of service that eNom is as good as it gets. 90% of the time there are problems there is because you’re using a reseller.

As far as what you can do, it’s a reseller registrar, you can do anyting possible with a domain there. And you don’t have any ads to weed through on their site as a reseller. They also have a LOT of value added services both free and for pay.

If you want to look at it, I can sign you up a subaccount of mine and i’ll even push one of my unused domains to your account so you can get an idea what it’s like.

If you ended up beign happy with eNom directly it would have you a couple hundred bucks too, because pushing a domain from one reseller to another is free and instant.

JT you are absolutely on the button. I had a ticket out with my hosting service / reseller and we discovered, since my first post, that the notification email address had been set up wrongly when I transferred the domain in a couple of years ago. The reseller thought they were getting a cc when in fact it was the actual notification and I didn’t get anything so you were absolutely right. Therefore eNom had done nothing wrong so my apologies to them.

Normally my host is brilliant - I could go direct as a reseller but these guys have been great over the past six years.

I like GKG.net. I dislike GoDaddy intensely. They seem fine, so long as you don’t need to transfer/move your domains. But I found them to be like the old AT&T;when you actually need to move your domain elsewhere. They seem to actively block transfers with petty rules. The new AT&T;(aka old SBC) seems to be a bit better about this.

I’ve spent a couple months trying to transfer domains for two different clients from GoDaddy. We finally just purchased new domains, and let the old ones expire. Something really not possible if the clients had had a working site; but was okay since these were the introduction of new sites, and the client’s had just thought they be helpful by pre-purchasing the domain. They remind of the old Network Solution (what a pain to get domains freed from them). I can’t speak for Network Solution now, since we’ve transferred all of our clients from them.

I’ve used DirectNIC for years and received consistently good service, plus good DIY control of domains and domain transfers.

I’ve been a fan of namecheap.com for awhile now.  I especially love their interface.  Other registrars I’ve had experience with are GoDaddy and NetworkSolutions.  GoDaddy is fine except I absolutely hate their interface.  I can never find what I’m looking for without using their faq and help documents.  NetworkSolutions is a horrible rip off.  If you want to do anything with a domain beyond pointing it at a name server you have to pay them for it.  For instance forwarding an address to another one costs an additional $35 dollars.
