Single sign-on, do you use it and how do you envisage doing it in three years?

The minute you start looking outside ExpressionEngine for certain functionality, e.g. an independent forum module, a standalone shopping cart or (worst case) an existing membership environment, you also see the need for a single signon mechanism. When we say we want to “integrate” EE with other things, I get the feeling it’s often only the extra logins we want to avoid.

Are there any EE sites out there that already have been integrated into a single sign-on solution? How did you do it, and how difficult was it?

Are there any standards or products in the works that you believe will help you integrate environments with more ease in the future?

What do you think of OpenID? Is OpenID support an “obvious” feature request for EE already now, or should we wait to see how the market develops?

    Magnus, it’s certainly interesting.

After reading a little, I think OpenID doesn’t quite directly provide what one needs—i.e. to enable a website so that any programs reached through it are automatically signed into once the website has your login.

On the other hand, it feels also that one can implement that once OpenID is available, and given that the extra programs (other wikis, forums, e-learning systems, etc.) support OpenID themselves.

This would be a great thing for sites that agglomerate services, such as the e-learning mentioned.

In the mean time you can buy a system that does this, but it will be expensive. Great that competition is coming, and thanks for bringing this up - I had begun to look at it also.

    Kind regards,
    Clive
