    Hi everyone…

    Just partially venting a bit…
I’ve done a bunch of websites (and currently working on) now for some clients.

One very frustrating thing I’ve ran into a few times now is this:

Some of my clients have their own server or “look after” their server…. thus being “Server Administrators” I guess.

My problem is a they’ve all been completely over-protective and… well…. uptight annoying little “a” holes. Each and every one I’ve delt with. One of them has managed to stall my work SINCE JUNE, bickering over stupid little, everyday ordinary simple tasks to even just install the program…

I’m just so frustrated right now.

I’m also a little protective of my EE too  😛
A bunch have ended up installing EE themselves… (which really stings… it’s like someone stealing your baby! - for a few minutes anyway) 😛

I’m not bashing anyone in that “position”, I’m sure there are many “good” ones…

But what do you guys think? Have any similar troubles in your experience? Am I just being too protective myself maybe? 😛

Are you trying to say that they were hesitant to allow you to install EE on their production servers? Since I administer my own servers, I can understand their point of view.

I wouldn’t give anyone access to install anything on my server, and I can see why other admins would be the same way. Especially in a production environment.

As for installing server side programs (i think that was part of what you meant) I also would be hard pressed to install anything on a production server based on a request for a single website. Security and possible conflicts account for the majority of server crashes. Administrators (good ones at least) know this and are very protective of their hardware.

I wouldn’t look at it so negatively. I think you’ll find that they can appreciate your work without you having to appreciate theirs. Installing EE is extremely simple and I would be surprised to find a competent server admin that couldn’t do it in a few minutes. So that doesn’t surprise me.

Just don’t take it personally. That’s the key. They aren’t blasting you, they’re just protective and would be that way to almost anyone.

Same here. If you are responsible for production servers, you run as tight a ship as possible.

If you want something installed on the servers I’m responsible for, you’ll send me the code and a document that details the installation procedure step by tiny step and further, you’ll give me enough information to convince me that your installation procedure adheres to the product’s best security practices and follows the least privilege principle for application support.

Am I an a**hole and overprotective of my children (oops, I meant servers)? Absolutely and thanks for the compliment.

Hey guys, thanks for the replies!! 😊

    I hope I didn’t sound ignorant or offend anyone…
I’m new to this scenario of things. I’m used to just setting up a web host, and installing everything and whatnot…

So *I’M* the uptight ‘a’ hole then  😛

Glad we figured this out.  😊
    Any other opinions?

No, actually any server/network administrator worth their salt is always paranoid. Sysadmin = Paranoid, it’s the nature of the beast, and for VERY good reasons.

If you want a real treat, try to provide “production level” performance, stability and security in a shared hosting environment. Welcome to my life…
