WP Style "Pages" in EE

I’ve used Wordpress a lot and had one EE site which was built by someone else and I ending up selling it before I could really get into it.  So I have a question.

In WP, it’s extremely easy to set up “pages”, really easy.  I can enter them in a hierarchal fashion as well, and move them around within the structure quickly. I can take a simple theme and the pages and posts work well together without modification.

My new project may have a lot of pages and I’m wondering how EE handles the concept of “pages”.  If I remember correctly, I don’t just “add a page” I have to clone one of the pages and then change its content, and then manually add the page to the sidebar (or whereever) right? And what about easily setting up a modifiable hierarchy for them? What’s the process for “pages?”

The reason I’m thinking about EE instead of WP in this case is the integrated forum.

    Hi, slobizman!

Have a look at the Pages Module, new in 1.6, as well as the Pages Documentation.

I think that you will find these to be what you are looking for. =)

Cool!  So, to create a hierarchy is simple? Is that created by just setting up the urls correctly?  Like:

    site.com/toppage
    site.com/toppage/subpageA
    site.com/toppage/subpageA/subsubpage1
    site.com/toppage/subpageA/subsubpage2
    site.com/toppage/subpageB
    site.com/toppage/subpageB/subsubpage1
    site.com/toppage/subpageB/subsubpage2

In the above case, the subsubpage’s would have the info on them.  The toppage, and subpageA and subpageB would really just be “page categories”.  Would I have to actually make pages for those “page categories” for this to work?

Any examples of this anywhere on any sites?

These are, essentially, weblog entries with a special URI that you assign specifically, so you can use the normal category sytem in EE to categorize them if you so wish.

Many sites have it working at this point, but I have not seen a post “introducing” this particular feature, as it is more something that blends in, rather than is built around, if that makes sense?  As opposed to a photo gallery or forum.

As a note, if you do not have a licensed version, you might wish to check out the hosted demo: http://expressionengine.com/sales/try/ which includes the Pages Module, to work with it and get a feel for it. You can also check out the Pages Quick Start Guide.

Followup question on the categories:  Can I have two sets of categories, one for blog posts and one for pages?

Note: Just wanted to say that the EE community is the quickest, best of all the various CMS and blog community forums areound!  By far.

    First - thank you!!! =)

Now to actually answer your question.  You can have unlimited category groups, and any given weblog can be assigned multiple category groups as well.

You can also create as many “weblogs” as you need.

So the short answer is yes - but the long answer is, “yes, but boy is there a lot of flexibility here for you to explore!” =)
