Just thought I’d say I’ve brought a brand new toy!  :cheese:

I brought a new laptop yesterday.  I took the plunge and brought a brand new MacBook.  I figured I’d at least try one and since I seem to buy a new one about ever 2 - 3 years well if I don’t get on with Mac I can go back to PC.

Now I just have to learn how to drive it!  😝

I know that this really does not have anything much to do with anything but I thought I’d share.

I’ve been using a Mac for 7 years, 4 years exclusively. Best decision I ever made. I bought a Macbook a few months ago. The only thing I dislike is the quality of the built-in camera. The original iSight was much better in my opinion. Just a minor gripe, however. Welcome to the Mac community. You’re Steve Jobs’ biatch now 😛

gee thanks guys… I just could not help but ‘share’ my new toy.

PXLated… I think the fanatic thing about mac is already happening… do they put some chemical on the puter that transfers/absorbs into the skin to ‘turn people?  LOL… one of the guys at work is interested in switching from pc to mac so I took mine in last night so he could ‘play’ (well ok I took it in to do the whole ‘look what I got’ thing!)

I have manage to get all my files transfered, documents, music, photos, website stuff.  Got my internet working (that was a bit of a drama but mainly silly tech support people saying ‘sorry do not know anything about Mac’s I can not help you’.  After calling back finally found a guy who while he did not know about Mac’s either he went off and found out what I needed to do to make the connection.

One thing some of you may know… how does one switch from moving the pointer around the screen to scrolling on the touch pad? It is switching, at some point/somehow but am not really sure how…. somehow I go from moving the pointer to scrolling the page and can not work out how to switch it back when I want to move the pointer….. (or really how I switched from moving the pointer to scrolling down the page)  😊

Moving the cursor/scrolling…If you use one finger, it points, use two and it scrolls. You can also turn on a preference so you can do a two finger tap to select. There’s a little app called FlyGestures where you can create your own motions for various actions. Search on VersionTracker.com. In fact, VersionTracker and MacUpdate are a great sources for software (free, shareware, and commercial).

Edit-Add-1: Since your Mac is new, you’ll probably be trying various software, some you’ll like some you’ll trash. Trashing is easy, it gets rid of the App. But a lot of apps install preferences and other things that you probably also want to trash. Takes some searching through the User Library, not hard, but there is a little app called AppTrap that makes it painless.

Edit-Add-2: By the way, you’re in good company, EE was developed on Macs…Rick and Paul are both Mac heads.

The two finger scroll is turned off be default, don’t ask why. Go to System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > and choose the Trackpad tab. There you can choose to use two fingers to scroll and other things. Personally, I would avoid selecting Dragging and Drag Lock. That option seemed to get more in the way than helping. Hope this helps.

Wow I have been using a ibook, powerbook, Macbook Pro for years and never knew that. The old powerbooks used to have a scroll spot on the side of the touch pad. Thank PXLated for the new tip. I am going to enable the feature now.

I am getting a MacBook Pro next month (hopefully!) although I have bee torn between a MacBook and MacBook Pro.

I’m sure I will need the extra screen size (13” vs 15”) but I am thinking I might want to play some games for relaxation (MacBook Pro has 8600GT!).

Alternatively I could buy a 24” LCD with the MacBook and to hell with games…

I also want to edit videos and RAW photos.

I really can’t make up my mind!

I have the 17” HD (ultimate)...it’s a brute to haul around but the resolution is wonderful. My original plan was to hook a Cinema display in as I have with my desktop system (being retired). But, I’m rethinking as the 17” has plenty of screen real estate, in fact more than my old Cinema. I may at some point get the Cinema but it’ll be a luxury rather than an absolute need.
Of course, your wishes, hopes, and milage may vary.

I have a 17” VAIO and it weighs a tonne!

I want something a little more portable but I wonder what coding on a 13” screen will be like?

It’s mainly the games aspect that is making me think. It is powerful enough to run some nice games but will I really be playing them?

I hate XBOX/PS3 etc as I am a keyboard and mouse man!

I have both at home. The only really game that I play is World of Warcraft. And both computers play it just fine. I will admit my MacBook Pro does do much better. I am coming from the other side. I have always liked smaller laptops. My MBP was my first larger laptop. I love it and I never have regretted the decision. My suggestion is to look at the MBP. It really is much faster and prettier then the macbook.

Some friends have MacBooks and there is no way I personally could use them, especially with photoshop. My previous laptop was a 17” and like you mention they are heavy so I planned on going back to the 15”. When I got to the Apple store I played with Photoshop on side by side 15 & 17” and ended up sticking with the 17. There was a huge difference. Go play and see what works.

Well then I think the 15” it is then. I don’t like the bulk of the 17” and I usually have the resolution at 1280x768 anyway.

    Cheers for the advice!
