I’ve just been browsing through the Plugins section.  I noticed that some of the plugins are now several years old and it’s not clear whether they will work with the latest version of EE.  Are plugins removed from that section if they stop working with updated versions of EE or are they posted and left up there for ever?  Having had lots of bad experiences with plugins in MT/WP I’m wary of downloading plugins which are 3 years old.

Some are, some aren’t. Depending on what they do, updates can/cannot be a problem. I always search the forums before considering a plugin. And, I try to do everything natively first. I’ve even changed my design to avoid using them. Burnt onece and been skeptical ever since.

You can find another list here:

we do take down plugins that prove to become problematic and to keep it clean.  You can of course ask here, and first-party ones are always supported. =)

The date is the original release date, so may not indicate the “freshness”.  First party plugins are definitely updated when necessary, and if you ever find a plugin that does not work or is not current, simply let us know.  If it’s our own, we’ll update it quickly, if it’s a third party, we’ll let them know, and depending on how critical it is, may temporarily remove it from the add-on repository.
