MSM and *different* member DBs?

I have a personal site using EE Personal. My wife is starting up a for-profit business.

I was thinking about creating her new site in EE, so I know I need a commercial license for that.

I know I can’t have two different licenses with MSM, so I would have to upgrade my personal site to commercial (ouch) if I wanted to use MSM with both sites.

This leads me to two questions:
    1) is there an upgrade price? I *think* if I pay $200 for MSM I also need to buy a commercial license ($250). Is that right?
    2) Can I have *separate* user databases with MSM? With a commercial site and a personal site, I don’t want to share any users.

    Thanks

For the licensing, you could upgrade your personal license to commercial, then buy the MSM. That would be the most cost effective way to handle this for you.

For your membership questions: the user database is installation-wide - but you can make different membership templates and set different default member groups, as well as exclude different member groups from the member list for each site.  You might want to fiddle with this on the hosted demo to see how it works before purchasing - you can do that here: http://expressionengine.com/sales/try/

Also remember that all sites must be owned by the same entity.  Since you are husband and wife this shouldn’t be a problem but I just wanted to mention it. =)

as well as exclude different member groups from the member list for each site.

Does this extend to the member search and group listings within private messaging, too?

As for “the entity”, does that mean I would need to transfer the license to her company first, and then buy MSM?

Hmmmm…or I could just buy a commercial license for her business and then have to deal with two maintenance portals.

    Thanks

Erin - if the site is going to be owned by her company, and your site is owned by you, then that would really mean separate installations and fully separate licensing.  Of course, if you both own the company as a joint commitment then it isn’t a problem.

A fully separate installation may be the best for this particular venture; though it really does bear some investigating on your end, about how you wish to handle these.

Markus - I am not quite sure what area of ExpressionEngine you are referring to, perhaps you could begin a new thread and we’d be happy to address your concerns directly?

    Gotcha.

Thanks for clearing that up Lisa.
