I’m from Norway, and of course here the iPhone is still a long way off. But I will be getting one around july 28th. I’m currently following the exploits of Jon Lech Johansen’s So sue me blog, and the guys over at The iPhone Dev Wiki. (Link not included per request) The progress is good every day, and hopefully by the time I get my phone, I’ll be able to use it with my current networkprovider. Apple will probably not release the iPhone in Norway due to their licensing.

Norwegians are usually not that fond of the kind of restrictions placed upon phones by confining them to one network, and taking away their “rights” to switch to cheaper nets. Hopefully I’ll be able to enjoy most of the iPhone’s features!

Haven’t really followed the Wiki but have been reading the Roughly Drafted series on cell phones and the various differences in networks worldwide. In one of his latestest posts he states…

“the idea of “unlocking the iPhone” for use inside the US is somewhat silly” ... Roughly Drafted

He continues through the various countries and why just unlocking may not mean much.

Interesting article, but not really covering the situation with the cellular networks in Norway I think 😊 I think I would benefit from the “hack” on the iPhone here, with one exception… Visual voicemail. This feature I think would have to be part of the network, so I don’t expect it to be available to me. But All other features seem like something I would have, and since I’ll be getting the iPhone free of charge, I will have to be content with that 😊 Will be an interesting experience to try out none the less
