    Hi Folks

The following is a truncated version of a request we have had from a prospective client. Do you think EE could handle all of the following? Or will we need to ask a developer to join us for this one?

    ...

    * The administrator will be able to select, on a page by page basis both if a page will show up in the navigation and if it will display its content to a user. This allows a highly flexible system of deploying and securing content.

is this something that can be assigned to user groups? i.e. members <> supporters

    * The system will feature a comprehensive advertising rotation system that will ensure a fair method of serving adverts across four different tiers. Each advertiser can be assigned to a tier and each page can also be assigned a tier. The system will intelligently pick the adverts for each page by selecting the correct tier and then using an extensive statistics tracking system to select which adverts will be shown on any given page.

is there an advertising module or add-on..? or an existing system that could be implemented and tweaked to work this way

    * Each page will allow a customizable ‘split header’ – an image uploaded by the administrator and a selected page sponsor image to compliment the sites capabilities in working as an advertising platform.

this would have to be linked an ad system

    * It will feature a poll that will deployed to every page, the administrator will be able to post new polls with an unlimited amount of answers. Users will be able to vote on the website, and votes will be controlled via an anti-cheating mechanism that allows a single vote on each poll by an individual IP address. The poll will be also allow a vote per-user, to compensate for when an IP address is shared. The poll will display its results graphically, In a bar graph format. The poll will feature a sponsor, which is selectable via the administrator.

could this be added/controlled via the forum module?

    * The website will feature a categorised directory system where listings for companies will be available. A category and full-text search facility are available via every page of the site in a ‘Find a ...’ box. Each listing will be allowed to feature an image, such as a logo or advertisement. A full page of editable content will be provided to each listing.

seems perfectly logical in theory, but some pointers would be great

Quite a lot there to think about - I’d be chuffed if I could do this all with EE as taking on a bigger project will encourage speedier learning!

    Cheers, Liam

You could certainly do this by using member groups and multiple weblogs.  For example, you could create a weblog called “members” and a weblog called “supporters”, and then post the relevant content into each, while securing them on the backend.

The template code might get a little complex, but it’s doable.

AFAIK, there is no advertising module, per se.  However, I think you could work up something similar by creating a weblog for your content and a weblog for your ads, and then tying the two together via a relationship.  When I’ve had to incorporate banner ads into a site, this is how I’ve done it.

However, I’m not sure about the “extensive statistics tracking system to select which adverts will be shown on any given page” bit.  There aren’t a lot of “extensive” statistics built into EE.

I’m not sure about the forums, but you could look into a module like EEPoll.

This is as easy as creating another weblog for the directory alone, and then perhaps adding some custom fields (i.e. “Logo”, “Description”, etc.).
