I have just been reading a useful wiki post about Weblogs Vs. Categories in EE.  I am pretty new to EE so I am still not sure which route to chose for parts of the site I am building.  Attached is a rough sitemap, I was wondering if any EE veterans might be able to recommend a path of attack.  Many of the pages will contain static content that will be laid out in a rather unique way so I am not sure if I should just build them completely in the template editor or use a special weblog for each and define special fields to all the text elements.

However, mainly my query is about dividing the sections out, categories or weblogs or a mixture, what might you choose?

Any suggestions would be useful to me.

I’d do each section as a weblog with dedicated field structures where the content structure requires it (FAQ, etc).

I tend to always use weblogs for main site sections as I think it makes the most sense from a content workflow perspective - plus it keeps everything as flexible as possible in terms of access priviledges, field structures, and adding subnavigation if necessary down the road.

I’d also recommend putting *all* content in a weblog - no matter how static it is.

That was kind of what I was thinking too, making separate weblogs seems to afford the most flexibility and keeps options open for later expansion.  Personally I think “weblogs” is the wrong name for this content type, it makes one think only in terms of weblogs.  EE is supposed to be content agnostic so I think renaming this division of content as “content types” or something even more generic would help define what it is really used for, after all many people aren’t using EE for managing simple weblogs.

In building custom fields what is the significant difference between “Custom Weblog Fields” and category group custom fields?

So rename “weblog” to “section” in the control panel…;)

Custom fields for weblogs and for categories differ in that they will be used at different levels in the site architecture.  Weblog fields are part of a weblog post which are usually your lowest-level content, categories are groupings of weblog posts.
