    Hi there, I seem to have a problem with a website I’m building, you can view it here: http://www.luellasboudoir.co.uk/index.php My client is viewing this on a Mac (I’ve asked for full specs) her husband can view it on a Mac with same OS and browser, however when she views the site she gets the following error:

    Disallowed Key Characters:

    I’ve changed core/core.input.php to the following:

    if ( ! ereg(”^[A-Za-z0-9\_\-\/]+$”, $str))
    {
    exit(’Disallowed Key Characters’);
    }

    Change it to this:

    if ( ! eregi(”^[A-Za-z0-9\_\/\-]+$”, $str))
    {
    exit(’Disallowed Key Characters’);
    }

    We now get this error message:

    Disallowed Key Characters: luellasboudoir_co_uk_rachel|real_name

    Please advise the best way to resolve this.

    Many thanks,

    Paul.

    Hi, Paul - is your client behind a firewall or Proxy server?  Something like phpProxy or similar?

    Seems to display fine for me, I think Lisa could be right that there is some issue with your clients set up.

    BTW, welcome to the wonderful place that s the EE Forums. Long and fruitful may your relationship with Expression Engine be. 😊

    I’m not sure I can check this for you. Only odd this is both her and her partner would connect to the internet in the same way / presumably thought the same proxy / firewall.

    It could be a setting on her computer. I can’t replicate it either, though - I get the site fine, no Disallowed Key Characters.  You could try asking her to clear her cookies - if she has a cookie with a disallowed character it could cause that error.  it’s an easy thing to try.

    Cheers for the quick response, BTW Lisa, and you too Nath. I’ll give the client a call and run through a few more tests.

    Many thanks,

    Paul.

    My pleasure.  Keep us updated on what you find out!

    It appears someone else is getting the same problem on a dell laptop..! I’m chasing machine specs, os, and browser information as well as any firewall settings. They are also going to check the firewall settings for us.
    Both users also get the same issue when trying any of the websites URLs including the Expression Engine admin area.

    If this is a firewall issue could that mean other people other there may not be able to see the site? Do you think there will be a workaround for this as it’s a commercial site? As you’d imagine losing potential customers is not that great.

    Thanks again and I’ll no doubt keep you informed.

    Paul, which version/build of EE are you running on this client site? You can find that information in the bottom of your CP pages. Let’s make sure you’re on the same build we are.

    I don’t have that problem on a PC running Firefox 2.0.0.4.

  • #10 / Jul 03, 2007 5:19pm

    We’re running 1.5.2 so we could run the updates I guess.

    The plot thickens…

    User 1 Jude
    ————————————-
    Mac laptop 1 Firewall settings - see attached image. The site does’nt run with the firewall on OR off.

    Same Mac laptop 1 (Jude) running safari through firewall can not see the site, and get this error:
    Disallowed Key Characters: luellasboudoir_co_uk_rachel|real_name

    We then installed firefox 2.0.0.3 to Mac laptop 1 and they CAN now view the website.

    User 2 Matt
    ————————————-
    Mac desktop, running same build safari, in the same building, through same firewall wioth same settings CAN view the site with no problems.

    User 3 Rachel
    ————————————-
    Diffrent location, not sure about the firewall settings, same problems.
    Client number 2  (Jude), running a dell latop gets slightlly diffrent error:
    Disallowed Key Characters: luellasboudoir_co_uk_jude|real_name

    Note Users 1 and 3 get an error with the OTHER users name?!

    My gut feeling it could be a cookie. I dont want to clear them all as it wont help explain which one breaks the site…

    Are there any further tests I can do to try and isolate the particular cookie?

    Paul., this is really, really feeling like a proxy caching system that is adding some strange characters and triggering the Disallowed Key Characters.  I’ll have someone more familiar with server setups pop on over but I do suspect that there is something else between the computers and EE that is causing an interference.

  • #14 / Jul 03, 2007 5:53pm

    Cheers Lisa.

    I’m tempted to delete the cookies or back them up from on of the computers to see it is is that. That way its another step in the right direction. If it works we could try and find the given cookie…

    I’ll let you know how it goes.

    Oh, I thought I had mentioned that, my apologies. Absolutely delete the cookies - if a cookie has bad information in it, it could certainly trigger this error. That is the easiest thing to isolate out of the equation.
