"Permission denied" error trying to delete smileys

I’m running a pre-production server, and just tried to upgrade to 1.6 from an earlier version. Since it’s just a dev server, I decided it would be easiest to just wipe the whole directory and install 1.6 from scratch. However, when I try to “rm -r” everything, I get an “access denied” error:

rm: cannot chdir from '.' to 'smileys': Permission denied

Ironically, I had trouble deleting that same directory from a flash drive a few days ago… still haven’t figured that one out, either.

What’s the deal with this directory, and how do I get rid of it?

What permissions does it have? Anyway, try “rm -rf” (f as in force), or you’ll have to change permissions.

I have no idea… I’m guessing 777, since that’s what I set the whole image directory to when I first installed. Since I can’t actually chdir to that directory, I can’t view any of the directory permissions. And, for the same reason, no rm command works. Can’t chmod it either.

Well, you might not be the owner of the files then. Clearly a case for your sysadmin.

That’s the frustrating thing… I am the sysadmin. And I’m using a root account. At first, I thought the problem was with permissions…

However, when I tried to delete that same folder from the flash drive from which I originally installed EE, neither my MacBook or my PC could do it. Both computers registered many thousands of files in the delete queue… so I’m left wondering if things somehow got corrupted when I was unzipping… maybe it’s a problem with the file system. The same folder in the new EE 1.6 install doesn’t give me any trouble.

    This is weird.
