My experience (thought limited) has been when I remove a member from the system, though they no longer exist, if they try to sign up under a new name with the same e-mail address,  they receive an error message…e-mail address not available?

Is there a way to purge the system of these pieces of info so they can be reused? Is there a setting to allow for the use of one e-mail address across multiple user-names?

    Thanks

Email addresses are not stored apart from a member’s account, so if you delete a member, the email address goes poof as well.  Are you sure that the member with a particular email address was deleted?

SELECT member_id, screen_name FROM exp_members WHERE email = '[email protected]'

But yes, you can allow multiple uses of the same email address.  ‘Allow Multiple Accounts Using the Same Email Address?’ in Security and Session Preferences.
