i’m with Robin on this one. Rather than having to keep track of a hack, albeit small, I’d encourage users to not use their email address as well.

As another option, if you want users using their email address, I believe the User Module from Solspace.com offers this functionality.

Good advice here- thanks guys. Obviously hacking the code isn’t ideal, but for our installation we needed usernames to be email addresses in order to keep consistency with an external database that uses email addresses as unique identifiers (and for various other reasons). It would be great if the username length field could be expanded by default going forwards - I know it’s not always ideal to use emails as usernames, but it is common practice elsewhere, and enabling it eases integration with external systems.
