I’m starting to get the hang of this sucker. At least I think I am.

And then something new jumps up and bites me.

I was working through a design tonight trying to create a new Section (aka Weblog) of my site to hold articles that had been published. Somehow, I ended up with a Weblog called Published Articles (I understand that) which somehow gets linked to a Field Group called “Article” (which I don’t understand at all as will soon become abundantly clear).

In Templates, I have a Template Group called “editorial” which as far as I can tell has no logical link to the Field Group “Articles” either. (You beginning to see where I’m confused?) That Template Group in turn has a single template called article_no_art.

A URL like http://sitename/index.php/editorial/article_no_art works exactly as I expect (yeah!) and I got the template basically working. But I can’t for the life of me figure out the purpose and role of the Field Group. Does it perhaps hold my custom fields? If that’s its sole purpose, then I understand EE at least at that level. If not, please enlighten me!

A field group are a group of custom fields.

When you click on PUBLISH and you see TITLE, SUMMARY and BODY? They are the default custom fields and they are assigned to a weblog.

So if you wanted a weblog of widgets your Field Group could be called Widgets, with custom fields such as Weight, Colour etc.

EDIT: I just remembered that you can watch a series of videos that will explain in greater detail.
