Last week, right before the release of a small little update we flippantly decided to call ExpressionEngine 1.6, Leslie announced a contest for winning a free copy of the Multiple Site Manager, another three (two?) lines of code or so that we threw together in between naps.  Unfortunately for a great many of you, this contest involved being all “creative”  and using applications like “Photoshop” and “Illustrator”.  Bah!  Where was the contest for developers?  The geeks who type away in such noble and glorious apps as BBEdit and TextMate, or if you are sufficiently old school, Word 5.1, the last truly usable version of a certain company’s word processor.  I am presenting that contest to you today, developers!  Not saying you cannot solve this puzzle with Photoshop, but if you like that much pain I can suggest far more efficient ways of achieving it.

    continue…

UPDATE: There is a winner, but it occurs to me that a few of you were not awake when this was released, which is unfair.  So, the first person who solved it will get an MSM license, as promised.  Also, the contest will continue until Noon PST and from all of the submitted answers I will choose one randomly and give that person an MSM license as well.

...Wait, what? I think I just burst something crucial in my attempt to understand that string of…um…whatever it is…

Ya Pauly, the last one was convoluted. If I remember correctly it had a lot of hex code in it.

I *hate* these problems. I got nowhere on the last one. and _every_ idea I’ve had for this one has just been a dead end.

Paul, did you even reveal the solution for the last one?

    Well, that it does again.

See I thought it was a hash, but then they are 32 character strings, and this isn’t. so that don’t work.

I had a quick look at hexadecimal but it would appear that any letters in the code can only appear with a number preceding them. That breaks the 2 digit pairing. so i’m stuck and should be working and not playing with this.

Doesn’t appear to be hex color codes…at least I can’t see a pattern after converting two rows.
    Paul, you’re just plain evil!

Well, it’s still hex encoded. There is actually an RFC that talks about it, RFC 4648.

Damn, was soo simple but it took me a lot of time to reach to an end (at least human readable).
(so simple when I realize that I’ve made dozen of encode/decode/base(64/32/12)and wasted lot of time (office time, but tell no one) to realize that… sometime you need a mirror)
    Hope I’m the 1st! 😊

Well, post the solution. If you are the first, good for you, and you’ve documented your priority. If you are not, it won’t hurt either way.

well, the “quest” contains also an email address, email that I have used already.. and I’m waiting for an answer. If it’s ok, I’ll pass the code and solution here. 😊

I know about the mail address, I got it, too. Interesting choice of text, by the way, but definitely easier than the last time.

However that turns out, I am glad that Paul doesn’t have to run off to Patagonia, though, cause a CTO is a terrible thing to waste.
