I can’t be accepted into Google’s AdSense program because there is “vulgarity” in my domain name. I’m wondering if anyone knows of any similar programs that do contextual ads, but have less strict acceptance guidelines. I’ve been trying AdBrite’s non-contextual ads on my site, but they haven’t been bringing in much revenue (part of that is my low traffic, which I’m trying to improve, but part of it is that the ads aren’t relevant).

I recommend Text Link Ads (affiliate link) without hesitation. Great payout.

Thanks, Ingmar. I think you mentioned them in another thread. But I think it came up that they have minimum traffic requirements, right? And I’m pretty sure that my site would be rejected right away, based on that. (I guess it couldn’t hurt to try, though).

Well, my blog got accepted, so that’s meaning something; do try them, by all means. Sometimes you only get accepted after a few weeks, but if you do: Well, I made more in a month than I did in a year of AdSense. So, I’m still not getting rich, but it refinances the hosting, which is nive. What I found fair, as compared to Google et al., is the “we buy a link and you get paid for the time it’s on your site” approach, regardless of views or click through rates.

Yeah, I gave it a try and was denied right off the bat. So, we’ll see what happens in the weeks to come.

What I really ought to be worried about, I suppose, is figuring out how to build traffic.

I’ve been using text link ads since I saw Ingmar post it here (by the way, I sent you a PM ingmar, I want to make sure you get the referral for me but i accidentally signed up using a raw URL. Please respond to the PM so I can make sure you get the credit)

Now, I was accepted to the company, but as of yet (i think about a week) they must not have sold any ads, because there are none showing up.

This doesn’t surprise me because it’s a very pin pointed blog, but I do expect some political advertising to pop up soon.

Yes, it starts slowly, naturally. JT, I am not sure there actually is a way to get that referral after the fact, and it’s not the end of the world 😊

Text-Link ads have worked very well for some of our sites. We also have a couple of sites using Kontera’s inline text ads, and the pay out has been very good. One site gets about 8,000 page views a day and there’s been half a dozen readers complain about the underlined ads over a 9 month period.

    What’s that, semi-relevant spam?

    I’d like to post a little follow up here;

Regarding the site I had rejected which gets easily 50 times the traffic.

The support teat at Text Link Ads indicated to me that the reason they rejected my other site is because the majority of the traffic comes from within a members area of the site. They want pages that do not require HTTP authentication.

So that might be part of the problem.

Also, i did finally have someone purchase an add, hopefully more will follow!

I’d like to echo that TLA can make you more money than adsense. I have TLA on my old blogger blog (from before I moved to EE) and it STILL makes me $20 a month - and there’s no traffic!

I’ve been trying to install TLA on my EE site, but every time I do, I get a 503. I am following the instructions religiously, but they are not 100% applicable since my sidebars are includes. Can anyone offer any advice? How dumb am I really being to not be able to get these implemented? TLA themselves have not been able to help.

I had the same problem at first.

Without looking, if I remember correctly TLA has it’s own PHP code you put on the site.

What I did was create a new template called TLA. Paste the code in that you get, and save it.

Go to the group, and make sure that execute php is enabled on that new template.

Then use an include for it where you want it to appear.

Alternatively the problem is likely that you haven’t enabled PHP on the include that has the code.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. And, good call that maybe I’d forgotten to enable PHP, because at first I did on the include.

But it won’t even let me paste that code into a new template and save it - PHP enabled, and I still get a 503.

Argh. I hate that I’m throwing money away here.

At $20 per month I am not even sure it would be worth the possible Google smack to your pagerank.  On the other hand, who cares about pagerank if you can’t get paid for it?  😉

Also, I suppose there is a possibility that Google is not lowering your real page rank (just showing it lower on the toobar,) but only Google can know what they do for sure.
